Hi friends! It has been a while! Angel baby has been so sick the past week and is just now getting better. He is cuddled up with the hubby at the moment, so I was able to sneak away for a bit to share a few measurement activities with you all.
Last week we started our nonstandard measurement unit. It is one of my favorites every year! We started off by discussing what estimating is, as well as nonstandard versus standard forms of measurements. We then started measuring our friends with different nonstandard units. We used cubes, bears, coins, beans, and shapes. They always think this is loads of fun!
The following day we took our shoes off! SHOO-WEE do these kiddos have some crazy smelling feet. Goodness gracious! They had to trace their shoe, draw the details on, and measure their shoe using three different forms of measurement. I gave each table several different Zip-loc bags filled with the manipulatives above. They could choose any three.
I told them we would be hanging their stinky feet in the hall for everyone to see their hard work. They thought this was just about the most hilarious thing I have ever said.
We made butterflies and measured their parts.

We measured different pictures and put them in order from shortest to longest and longest to shortest with these hats.
This is also something we reinforced and worked on at the teacher table during math stations. I just laminated the cards and let the kiddos use their Expo markers to write their measurements on the cards and order them accordingly.
We also found 3 objects from our table buckets and put them in order from shortest to longest. I love this activity!
We used these Flip It pictures in our interactive math journals.
The kiddos just wrote the measurements under each flip.
In one of our math stations the kiddos measured different summer pictures using a flip flop ruler. You can download this activity here for free.
….and today we made our Dream Castles! After drawing and coloring their castle, the kiddos record the measurements of the length and/or width of their castles.
