Helloooo sweet summertime! I don't know about y'all, but I have been soaking up this whole stay up late and sleeping in thing! Both of my kiddos have been awesome sleepers since day one. They could sleep all day if I'd let them. Anywho, I have been spending my late nights marking some things off my to-do list. One thing I have been wanting to get done is comprehension packs for my team and I to use next year. We hit the ground … [Read more...]

R controlled Phonics Friends
Long time no chat friends! Life has been one crazy party around here, but I'm back and ready to catch up with you all. As you know, phonics is a huge skill in first grade and most of the time, it is pretty boring for most of our kiddos. Last year I knew I had to jazz things up in my phonics instruction and create something meaningful, engaging, and something that helped the sounds stick with my students. That's when … [Read more...]
Fun with coins!
Last week we wrapped up our coin unit. Our coin unit is one of my very favorite skills to teach in math. Here's a quick glance at what we did. We started off watching this Brain Pop Jr. video and then made these hats. We also sorted and matched coins, their names, and their attributes in our math journals. You can read more about how we use math journals in my room and how they tie in to our math word … [Read more...]
Grinch Day!
This week has been nothing short of busy. Between school and getting packed for Disney I think I may or may not have had more than the average caffeine intake! Today was one of my favorite Christmas celebration days.... Grinch Day! The Grinch is just loads of fun! He left streamers, green glitter and foot prints all over the room! I used a sponge to make the Grinch's feet by cutting the sponge into the shape of his … [Read more...]
Dr. Seuss Week came early!
This year we celebrated Dr. Seuss way earlier than usual. We use the Journey's reading series and this week our story was all about Dr. Seuss, so.... we decided to go ahead and do our celebrating during our story. I didn't get a picture of everything, but I do have a few freebies for you that hopefully you can use during Read Across America or for Seuss' birthday week. We read The Foot Book and worked on antonyms. … [Read more...]
Time to the hour
Happy Hump Day! Last week we worked on telling time to the hour. We started off using this number line that I made last year. We talked about how the numbers on a clock are just like a number line except that they are not in a straight line. Afterwards, we put the number line in a circle to create a clock. During math stations, my small groups worked with me on recognizing the hour and minute hand. We used Playdoh in two … [Read more...]
Shapes!
It's time for some catching up! Last week we reviewed shapes and worked on identifying their attributes. We started off with these posters that I made from last year. Afterwards, we listened to the book The Shape of Things on You Tube. We made each shape on our geo boards and played Guess My Shape. This game is nothing fancy. To play, I told my students "I was thinking of a shape that had ___ sides and ___ vertices". They had to … [Read more...]
Main Idea fun!
This week in reading we worked on main idea and details. It can be tough for the little ones. Especially when we are still learning to read and write. We started off watching this Brain Pop Jr. video to introduce it. Gotta love Moby! Afterwards, I gave each table group a clear bag filled with these picture cards (details). They worked in groups to discuss what the main idea would be. Next, the groups … [Read more...]

Phonics Friends
One thing I absolutely love to teach (besides math) is Phonics. I don't know about y'all, but when I was in 1st grade we didn't have different spelling rules and fancy names like digraphs, diphthongs, etc. Vowels were vowels and consonants were consonants, and spelling was memorized. That's how it was in my neck of the woods anyways. Needless to say I was lost when I first started teaching 1st grade! I was trying to remember the names, … [Read more...]
Word Problems
Happy Hump Day friends! We have 2 more hump days until we are out for summer and this lady is every bit of ready. I love my job. A ton. But, being home with my babies can't come soon enough! This week we have worked on word problems. I ended up creating a few things that I really wanted my class to use while tackling this skill. It is a tough one for the littles. To jazz things up I told the kiddos that they would … [Read more...]
Adverbs and Teacher Appreciation Sale!
Lolly, Lolly, Lolly get your adverbs here.... I caNOT get that song out of my head! Raise your hand if you STILL love School House Rock! It's good stuff! Last week we worked on adverbs. They can be so tricky for little ones. Are they adjectives, or adverbs, or do they describe a noun, maybe they are a preposition....oh, it is just confusing for them! We started things off with Brain Pop and School House Rock. They save the day every single … [Read more...]
