Weather Activities and Centers
Place Value Weather Craft – Quite possibly my favorite weather craftivity. I love a good craft that allows students to use their imagination but ties in standards! Assign each student a number to create or let them choose their own! These are available in both place value and number sense (preschool & kinder focused).
It’s Raining Place Value – Draw clouds all over a piece of butcher paper or anchor chart paper. Write different numbers inside each cloud. Students use place value blocks to build that number. Hand on play based learning is my all time favorite! You can also tape the butcher paper or anchor chart paper on the whiteboard and use magnetic place value blocks. There is just something about throwing in a fun element that makes an activity ten times more engaging for our learners!
Place Value Tray – Throw a variety of place value blocks in a dip tray for students to easily grab for creating numbers! I get the trays from Hobby Lobby, The Dollar Tree, and/or Amazon.
Number Sense Weather Craft – Assign each student a number to create or let them choose their own! These are available in both place value and number sense (preschool & kinder focused).
Rainy Day Number Order – put the rain drops in number order, least to greatest, greatest to least, or build a 100s/120s chart with the cards.
Rainy Day Number Order Worksheets – Follow up with this worksheet. There are numbers to 20, 50, and 120 included!
Class Weather Graph – Create a class picture graph or bar graph with the types of weather cards. I love using these free editable picture cards for graphs!
Weather Graphing Worksheets – Follow up a graphing activity with this worksheet. For the first graph, students use the color by code box to color the different clouds. They use their data to create a tally graph and bar graph! On the second worksheet, students count the tally marks and use the data to answer questions.
Weather Graph Mats – Spinners are always a hit! Grab some colored cubes (or pompoms) and download these mats for students to create a picture graph and bar graph.
Raining Coins Craft – assign each student a value to create or let them choose their own. These make an adorable hallway or hanging display.
Raining Coins Worksheet – Follow up coin learning with this worksheet. I have several Coin Activities and skip counting with coins activities here.
Butcher Paper Coins – are instant engagement. Draw clouds on a large piece of anchor chart paper or butcher paper and you have one large interactive activity that can be used over and over again. Students love these. For the above activity, I like to put the same value in a few clouds for students to show that particular value in two ways.
I also like to use anchor charts for teaching heads and tails, identifying coins, and counting coins. You can see multiple thematic examples and all the different ways to use them for money here.
Identify Coins – is another way to explore coins with a weather theme on butcher/anchor chart paper. I also love to use the magnetic coins for an actual hands on, interactive white board activity.
Coin Math Mat – Students place coins under the cloud to create “rain” and count the collection of coins. You can find a huge variety of money cards here. Lots of options included that makes them perfect for differentiating for your grade level and money standard!
Sunny Fractions Craft – create a fraction sun using halves, thirds, fourths, or eighths. These turn out so cute!
Fraction Forecast Worksheet – students color the matching fraction.
2D Weather Shapes and 3D Weather Shapes – students build a storm cloud with shapes and record the attributes!
Sorting Shapes – draw clouds on butcher paper/anchor chart paper. This simple activity can hit a lot of standards: sorting shapes by 2D/3D, identifying shapes, and shape attributes. For 3D shapes you could have them sort by roll, stack, slide. I would even offer shape manipulatives with this activity, too.
Shapes in the Sky – this is a great follow up worksheet!
Measurement Cards – An easy way to incorporate measurement into your Weather learning is with these weather cards and worksheets! Check out this pack full of measurement worksheets.
Measurement Tray – Throw a variety of manipulatives in a chips and salsa tray for students to easily grab for measuring! I get the trays from The Dollar Tree or Amazon. One of the measuring standards for first grade is to measure with different nonstandard items and compare them. These trays are great for that!
Sunny Measurements – students estimate and measure the rays of the sun!
It’s Raining Time – another butcher paper/anchor chart activity. This can be done whole group on the carpet or on the whiteboard by adding magnetic tape to the back of the time cards.
It’s Raining Time Worksheet – follow up your time unit with these weather time worksheets or any of these time worksheets.
Sunny Grammar Craft – these are perfect for brightening up your grammar lesson!
Cloudy Words – Students can build skill based words or vocabulary words (see below) with letter manipulatives. My favorite letter manipulatives can be found here.
Weather Vocabulary Words – These can be used in a pocket chart, game, or with magnetic tape on the back and displayed on the board. These are also great to use for ABC order and writing.
Meteorologist Writing – This picture is from my Scuba Gear Writing in the Ocean Activities, but it would work great for a weather unit, too! Tell your students it’s time to become meteorologist! Pair up your students in groups of 2.
Use sentence strips to create a headband for each student. Attach a word or decodable sentence to their headband with a paper clip. Students take turns reading and writing what is on their sentence strip. Each student will also need a lap whiteboard or white paper inside a wipe off page protector to write words or sentences on. I absolutely LOVE this activity because student’s are helping each other decode words, read words, and write sentences! You can see more details here!
Rainbow Words – This Pop It game board mat is so much fun and can be used with multiple standards! Students take turns reading a word card. If they read the word correctly, they roll the dice, add them together and pop that many bubbles! You can find the Pop It Game Boards here!
Cloud Writing – Students create a cloud flip book craft and write about clouds!
Weather Journal – students create a weather journal and record the weather for one week by gluing the matching weather and recording the temperature on a thermometer. Students also predict the weather for the next day by circling what they think the weather will be.
Temperature Sort – students sort items by hot or cold!
Water Cycle Craft and Poster – students create a rain drop water cycle wheel by cutting and gluing the picture to the correct water cycle step.
Cloud Posters – display in a science center, writing center, or use on a whiteboard or easel during your learning!
Wind Races – students play in partners to blow a pompom onto a cloud by identifying different types of weather, clouds, and weather tools
Thermometers – students create a paper thermometer to explore how a thermometer works
