After wrapping up suffixes last week, this week was all about prefixes. We kept our focus just on prefixes un- and re-. I wanted to pop in real quick and share a few freebies with you all. Most of our activities were the same as the activities we did with suffixes. We started off by playing Match It. Each student got a base word card or a prefix card. They had to walk around the room to find their match. After finding their … [Read more...]
Suffix sorts with lots of freebies!
We have been working on suffixes over the past few weeks. Suffixes can be somewhat tricky for first graders, so having them apply the skills in as many hands on ways as possible....the better. I start our learning off with -ed and -ing. I introduce the rule with this flip anchor chart that was inspired by Amy Lemons a few years ago. After introducing the rules, I give each student a sticky note with a base word on it. The students … [Read more...]
Cause and Effect FREEBIE
Last week we reviewed cause and effect with the story The Three Little Pigs by James Marshall. After listening to it, we listed the different causes and effects from the story and made these flip flaps. After making the flip flaps, we glued them down to construction paper. I had my students work in groups to complete the sorts, but each person in the group completed their own. I paired up a struggling … [Read more...]
Earth Day, Dream Houses, and Suiting Up for Summer!
I wanted to share a few Earth Day activities with you all....I know I am late in the game, but maybe you can pin them for next year. Over the past few years, we have read The Lorax and created these 5W poems to summarize one of the characters from The Lorax story. The Once-ler (who) cut down truffla trees (did what) a long time ago (when) in the forrest (where) to get rich. (why) I let them choose if … [Read more...]
More measurement fun!
Have you heard of the Mouse Math series? They have the most adorable math books. One of my favorites is If the Shoe Fits by Jennifer Dussling. It is a wonderful book to use when introducing appropriate non-standard measuring tools. It has the cutest storyline about two mice that find a shoe and wonder if it will fit in their playhouse. After reading the story, we sorted out non-standard tools on our anchor chart by what would be … [Read more...]
Plants and Measurement!
Now that I am caught up on sharing pictures from the past few weeks, I wanted to show you what we have been up to in math and science. Vowel digraph oo
One of our favorite phonics friends is Dr. BOOwie. She teaches us about the long double oo sound. Our job throughout our learning is to help her find her sick patients. We have to add those patients to her Book of Boo Boos... ...diagnose them with Long double-o-itis... ...and make our rounds to check up on them. This is always a favorite friend in our classroom. We also learned about the short oo … [Read more...]
R controlled Phonics Friends
Long time no chat friends! Life has been one crazy party around here, but I'm back and ready to catch up with you all. As you know, phonics is a huge skill in first grade and most of the time, it is pretty boring for most of our kiddos. Last year I knew I had to jazz things up in my phonics instruction and create something meaningful, engaging, and something that helped the sounds stick with my students. That's when … [Read more...]
SomeBUNNY knows time FREEBIE!
In math, we have been working on time to the half hour. I was out of my room a lot this week due to DRA testing so I did not get many pictures....but I did happen to get a picture of one of my favorite things we did this week! Bunny clocks! I let each student choose their own time that they wanted to put on their bunny. They thought it was hilarious that these bunnies were popping out of Easter eggs. You can download the templates … [Read more...]
Fraction FREEBIES
I wanted to stop by and share a few fraction freebies with you all. I love craftivities and always try to make any skill tie into a craft someway or another. There's just something about seeing a cute craft hanging up that makes your teacher heart smile big. This week we wrapped up our fraction unit with these Pot of Gold Fractions. Each student had to color and write the fraction under each flip. They also had to … [Read more...]
Fun with coins!
Last week we wrapped up our coin unit. Our coin unit is one of my very favorite skills to teach in math. Here's a quick glance at what we did. We started off watching this Brain Pop Jr. video and then made these hats. We also sorted and matched coins, their names, and their attributes in our math journals. You can read more about how we use math journals in my room and how they tie in to our math word … [Read more...]
