Santa’s Helpers {Contractions}

I had lots of little helpers in my room today! I always have some good helpers, but today I had some *extra-ly* good helpers! I had SANTA’S HELPERS!!! This week, we are learning about contractions! I told the kiddos that Santa sent me a lot of words that really needed some work!! I told them that Santa needed these words to be taken apart and put back together to make one word instead of 2. Of course after all this, they were pumped to see what these words were! After revealing the words and showing them how to take these words apart and put back together, they were ready to start their work. No work for Santa is complete without a helper’s hat of course!! Contractions 2012-1 After getting our hats on, it was time to get out all of our *tools*! We got out our saws (scissors), hammers and screwdrivers (pencils), nails (Avery circle labels), paint (crayons), and our wood glue (glue). I gave each kiddo one of Santa’s words and they got to work! They painted (colored) the words, cut and nailed (glued and used circle labels) to put the words back together! Contractions 2012-1-3 It was too fun y’all! Contractions 2012-3  Contractions 2012-4 Contractions 2012-5 Contractions 2012-6 Here’s how to make the Elf hats. They are super duper easy! You will need just a regular size piece of construction paper. Fold the top two corners down to make a large triangle. Contractions 2012-3-2 Trim off the bottom piece…. Contractions 2012-4-2 Staple the two sides to make a cone shape…. Contractions 2012-5-2 …cut out two Elf ears Contractions 2012-1-2 Staple one ear to each side of the hat…. Contractions 2012-2 and glue a cotton ball to the top like so! Contractions 2012-1 I used these labels for our *nails*. I just had to kiddos color them grey before they used them! Contractions 2012-2-2 Happy Wednesday friends!!! {Congrats Rachel for guessing my favorite Christmas song!! Thank you all for playing along!!} 🙂

    […] December is by far my most favorite time of year….EVER! I love crafts and all things Christmas, so tying that into any lesson in my classroom makes me giddy!  I wanted to pop in and share a quick, FREE elf drawing and writing activity with you all.  These are great to use after your classroom elf makes their appearance, a follow up activity after reading an elf book, or for a quick writing!  I always like to complete these drawings together (on the board) with my students step by step. You can download the drawing steps and writing page here.  Another one of my favorite things to do is make these fun little elf hats with my kiddos! You can find the steps here.  […]
