Phonics Friends
One thing I absolutely love to teach (besides math) is Phonics. I don't know about y'all, but when I was in 1st grade we didn't have different spelling rules and fancy names like digraphs, diphthongs, etc. Vowels were vowels and consonants were consonants, and spelling was memorized. That's how it was in my neck of the woods anyways. Needless to say I was lost when I first started teaching 1st grade! I was trying to remember the names, … [Read more...]
Word Problems
Happy Hump Day friends! We have 2 more hump days until we are out for summer and this lady is every bit of ready. I love my job. A ton. But, being home with my babies can't come soon enough! This week we have worked on word problems. I ended up creating a few things that I really wanted my class to use while tackling this skill. It is a tough one for the littles. To jazz things up I told the kiddos that they would … [Read more...]
Adverbs and Teacher Appreciation Sale!
Lolly, Lolly, Lolly get your adverbs here.... I caNOT get that song out of my head! Raise your hand if you STILL love School House Rock! It's good stuff! Last week we worked on adverbs. They can be so tricky for little ones. Are they adjectives, or adverbs, or do they describe a noun, maybe they are a preposition....oh, it is just confusing for them! We started things off with Brain Pop and School House Rock. They save the day every single … [Read more...]
Gettin’ our Measurement On!
Hi friends! It has been a while! Angel baby has been so sick the past week and is just now getting better. He is cuddled up with the hubby at the moment, so I was able to sneak away for a bit to share a few measurement activities with you all. Last week we started our nonstandard measurement unit. It is one of my favorites every year! We started off by discussing what estimating is, as well as nonstandard versus standard forms of … [Read more...]
Math Journal Tidbits….
I've had a few ask about our math journals, so I thought I would do a quick post to show you how we use them and tie them into our math word wall. Our math curriculum coach shared these with us and seriously y'all, I don't know why I never did this before!?! I stalk Target ever summer waiting for their composition notebooks to be on sale. When they are, I snatch up a class set. I am not picky about them all matching, so I usually just grab … [Read more...]
Sticky note Fractions
Math standards here in Texas have changed quite a bit this year. We no longer teach fractions of a set anymore - just wholes now. I wanted to share a few things we did during our fraction unit. The kiddos started off understanding equal and unequal parts with Pop-Tarts. Afterwards we moved on to fourths and halves. That is something else that changed with our TEKS this year. We only teach halves and fourths. I gave each kiddo a handful … [Read more...]
Phonics made fun!
I am all about making phonics engaging and relatable. I mean, how many different sounds are in the English language? Too many for my adult brain to even get sometimes. I can't imagine how overwhelming it is for my kiddos. I like to start each phonics skill with something catchy for the kids to apply the sound to. Sometimes its a visitor, dressing up, play on words, or anything fun. Last week we had so much fun exploring … [Read more...]
Shapes!
In math we have worked non-stop on 2D shapes this week. We started the week off getting to know our shapes and learning all about their attributes. After reading The Greedy Triangle, we went over our shape posters and created shape cards for our math word wall (more on those tomorrow). We made Flip Its in our math journals to label and write the names and attributes for each shape. We also read When a Line … [Read more...]
All about those graphs!
Hi friends! We are packing for a 3 day trip to Houston for checkups on Angel Baby, so I gotta be quick! We have been all about graphs in math the past 2 weeks! Today, we worked in our interactive journals! The kiddos always love to use these! In small groups, we played Spill and Graph! I placed all the cards in a little tub and picked one kiddo to spill them. We flipped over any that landed on white. This was a great … [Read more...]
Vowel Teams
I wanted to drop in real quick before I pick little man up from daycare and take Priss to Gymnastics! This week is our second week learning about vowel teams. Geez these things can be so tricky!! I have these posters hanging up in the room to remind the kids that the letters work as a team to make 1 sound! This week our focus is on ai/ay. I made these cheerleaders to (hopefully) anchor down our learning that these letters … [Read more...]
Inspired!
Something that sets teaching apart from any other profession is being inspired by others. Y'all, there are some amazing teachers out there! Last night I was wide awake! Bright-eyed-and-bushy-tailed! I checked my Facebook and saw this post from Kickin' it in Kinder. I knew tomorrow was going to be a busy day with wrapping up punctuation, working on letter writing parts, and comparing numbers.....so I racked my brain on what supplies I … [Read more...]
