Well, I don't know about y'all, but the official countdown has started in our room! I cannot believe summer is right around the corner! We have had lots of conversations about how we are "suited" up and ready for summer AND 2nd grade! Today, we made a list on the board of all the things we have done this year to prepare ourselves for the next grade. Afterwards, each student chose one thing that they really felt like … [Read more...]

Earth Day, Dream Houses, and Suiting Up for Summer!
I wanted to share a few Earth Day activities with you all....I know I am late in the game, but maybe you can pin them for next year. Over the past few years, we have read The Lorax and created these 5W poems to summarize one of the characters from The Lorax story. Plants and Measurement!
Now that I am caught up on sharing pictures from the past few weeks, I wanted to show you what we have been up to in math and science. Last week we started our measurement unit, and lemme just tell ya'....it has been my students favorite! Not kidding! I have been wanting to add some mentor texts into my math instruction for awhile now and I finally went for it! I complied four of my favorite mentor texts for measurement … [Read more...]
Verb Tenses and a Long A Freebie!
I wanted to hop on real quick and share a quick, cute, and simple long a freebie with you all. Last week we worked on long a. On Friday we sorted snowballs by long a and short a. We used all the long a snowballs to create a winter scene. I usually do these every year and always love to see what scenes my students come up with. Here's a few from this year. Some days we just run out of time. Friday was one of those days! Otherwise, … [Read more...]
Deck the Halls!
Last Thursday we had our annual Math Night at school so decking the halls with Christmas was definitely in order! In math we have been working with numbers so to add a holiday touch to our learning we made a NUMBER TREE FARM! I wrote several numbers on sticky notes and put them on the board. My students had to pick a sticky note off the board, take it back to their seat, and complete their number tree using that … [Read more...]
Thanksgiving Week!
Hi friends! I'm playing a little catch up from last week. In language arts we worked on prepositions for where and when. Oh boy can these be tough for our little ones! After discussing what a preposition is, we played "Pin the feather on the turkey"! The kiddos LOVED this. They each had a turn to pin the feather anywhere they wanted to on the turkey. We used magnetic tape on the back of the feather to make it easily … [Read more...]
Main Idea fun!
This week in reading we worked on main idea and details. It can be tough for the little ones. Especially when we are still learning to read and write. We started off watching this Brain Pop Jr. video to introduce it. Gotta love Moby! Afterwards, I gave each table group a clear bag filled with these picture cards (details). They worked in groups to discuss what the main idea would be. Next, the groups … [Read more...]

Catching up with Back to School activities
Since I am not one to cook, much less prepare a meal ahead of time, I wanted to catch up on our back to school activities that we have done the past few weeks. Bare with me as I let the pictures do most of the talking. Here are a few of my favorites to do each year. Last week we read If You Take a Mouse to School and completed this text connection. You can find the mouse templates plus the writing stem here and … [Read more...]

We started things off with Brain Pop and School House Rock. They save the day every single … [Read more...]
Phonics made fun!
I am all about making phonics engaging and relatable. I mean, how many different sounds are in the English language? Too many for my adult brain to even get sometimes. I can't imagine how overwhelming it is for my kiddos. I like to start each phonics skill with something catchy for the kids to apply the sound to. Sometimes its a visitor, dressing up, play on words, or anything fun. Last week we had so much fun exploring … [Read more...]
